Purpose: The purpose of the scholarship program is to support students in environmentally related fields of study, such as conservation, agronomy, agriculture, botany, environmental concerns, forestry, horticulture, landscape design/architecture, and/or other allied subjects.
Standards: Merit is the predominant selection criterion, consistent with regarding the scholarship as recognition of academic achievement. Also considered are commitment to career, character, variety of avocation, and financial need.
Amount: Scholarship funds are dependent on the Garden Club's annual budget, which is determined in April and is directly related to the success of the Club's Cup of Cheer™ housewalk and holiday market, its only fundraising activity, held the first Friday in the previous December.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Preference will be given to students residing in school districts 203 and 204. In addition, applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue an environmentally related course of study. High school seniors should have a 'B' average, while college students should maintain a 'B' average in the major discipline.
Renewal: Scholarships are renewable on a yearly basis provided the student reapplies, remains in an environmentally related field of study, is in good standing with his or her college or vocational school, and continues to meet the program's standards.
Application Procedure: Completed application forms and supporting materials (applicant's statement, transcripts and recommendations) are to be returned to the Scholarship Chairperson by April 1.
Transcripts should be complete through the first semester/term of the applicant's current year of study.
